چکیده

Transportation is second only to industrial use as the largest consumer of energy in the US and accounts for about 60% of our nation’s use of petroleum—an amount equivalent to all of the oil the country imports. The numbers are staggering: Some 10 000 gallons of petroleum are burned in the US each second of every day. Although new energy sources are being developed and renewable fuels are emerging to replace crude oil, improvements in the efficiency of internal combustion engines hold the promise of increasing our energy security and mitigating climate change. The environmental consequences and health hazards posed from urban smog and other combustion byproducts led to US regulation in the late 1970s designed to limit the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrocarbons, and other pollutants from internal combustion engines. Controlling those emissions while maintaining high efficiency is a continuing challenge. In the last decade, a combination of improved combustion technologies and exhaust after-treatments has nearly eliminated those emissions from gasoline spark-ignited engines. Emissions from the more efficient compression-ignited diesel engines have proven more difficult to control. For example, catalytic converters are not practical for diesel engines because residual oxygen in the exhaust poisons the catalysts. For a review of internalcombustion basics, see the box on page 48. Standards continue to tighten, with new diesel emissions regulations taking effect in 2010. For consumers to continue benefiting from the high efficiency of diesel engines, meeting those new regulations is critical.

Thermoeconomic comparison between the performance of small-scale internal combustion engines and gas turbines integrated with a biomass gasifier

Recently, many countries have paid substantial attention to power generation from biomass gasification, particularly through small-scale plants. A number of power plant models have been suggested and analyzed; however, certainly, desirable configurations have not been identified yet. Moreover, their performances are ordinarily difficult to compare, especially owing to the fact that working ...

The Reports of My Death Have Been Greatly Exaggerated – An Internal Combustion Engine’s Story

Internal combustion (IC) engines have been around for more than 150 years and helped usher in the industrial age. With the rapid change of technology in the world today, one might suspect that IC engines will soon be a thing of the past, replaced by newer, better technologies. While no one knows the answer yet, a strong case can still be made for the future of the IC engine. Research and develo...

Ethanol Fuelled HCCI Engine: A Review

The greenhouse effect and limitations on carbon dioxide emissions concern engine maker and the future of the internal combustion engines should go toward substantially and improved thermal efficiency engine. Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) is an alternative high-efficiency technology for combustion engines to reduce exhaust emissions and fuel consumption. However, there are still...

Prediction of Major Pollutants Emission in Direct-Injection Dual-Fuel Diesel And Natural-Gas Engines

The dual-fuel diesel engine (D.F.D.E) is a conventional diesel engine in which much of the energy released, hence power, comes from the combustion of gaseous fuel such as natural gas. The exhaust emission characteristics of the D.F.D.E needs further refinements, particularly in terms of reduction of Unburnt Hydrocarbons (U7HC) and Carbon Monoxide (CO) emission, because the concentration of thes...
